Mekong: A Writing Desk Inspired by the Wooden Boats of the Mekong River

Measuring 1600W x 800D x 762H, the Mekong writing desk is not only visually appealing but also practical. The desk features a removable drawer that can be opened with a light press, providing convenient storage space. Additionally, a gold-plated tray is included to hold small items such as phones or tablets.

One of the key strengths of this design is its ability to strike a balance between craftsmanship and mass production. While showcasing the intricate details of traditional carpentry, the Mekong writing desk also demonstrates the potential for wider accessibility through mass production techniques.

Tran Nguyen Bao Khoi faced several challenges during the design process. The most difficult part was selecting the simplest and most familiar elements of river life to become the defining features of the desk. The designer aimed to create a design that would be commercially viable while maintaining a sense of craftsmanship.

The Mekong writing desk has not yet been exhibited, but it has already received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
